Harlem
On our bus tour we
drove through Harlem, but we didn’t stop anywhere. Therefore, I saw
Harlem only in passing. I had
imagined Harlem much different than it was. Harlem is mainly inhabited by
non-Caucasian people and it’s a
large neighborhood in the northern section of the New York City borough of
Manhattan. At the beginning of 1900s there lived a lot of Jews, Italian, Irish and Finnish
people. Harlem has been known as a major African-American residential, business
and cultural center. After the year 1900 a lot of African-Americans moved to
New York. As a result of migration Harlem grew to be a “black metropolis”. Growing ethnic and economic hostility drove whites out.
Depression of the 1930s destroyed the economic opportunities and high rents
forced families to share apartments. Nowadays Harlem has seen an influx of new music halls, shops and
restaurants. I think that history of Harlem is very interesting, and Harlem is a
fascinating destination to visit.
